The Publication is a joint effort of Marty Ochs with the Green Bay Innovation Group (GBIG) and Ken Harwood Editor and Publisher of Wisconsin Development News. Both Ken and Marty have been directly involved with our industries for decades. Ken began his career with Kimberly-Clark, consulted with dozens of Fox Valley Companies and eventually became Mayor of Neenah Wisconsin before heading to Madison where he continues to advocate for Wisconsin businesses and communities. He is a journalist, cheerleader, and proponent for the companies that made Wisconsin what it is today. His other newsletters are read by 20,000+ people each week. Ken notes, "Wisconsin can not forget the industries that built Wisconsin. We must continue to grow the businesses that we are known for while exploring new markets and innovation." Marty Ochs founded GBIG to support Green Bay’s paper, packaging, printing, converting and support industries and has grown the effort to cover the local, state and national levels. Marty commented, "The impact and innovation of Green Bay’s paper and related industries often seems to go unrecognized, and we are going to change that." Ochs grew up in Northeastern Wisconsin and began his career in the paper industry, so he felt determined to bring more recognition to the thriving paper field in Green Bay. New research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison is working to change that — and cut down on millions of tons of plastic waste in the process. The research looks at the multilayer plastic materials common in food and medical supply packaging because they can be heat resistant or protect from oxygen and moisture seeping in. Yet, given the current recycling infrastructure, they are impossible to recycle. In the state of Wisconsin, there are only two types of plastic that are able to be recycled, rigid No. 1 and No. 2 plastics. The rest go to the landfill.... ![]() Have you ever stood in front of the trash can with your Starbucks cup and wondered whether to toss it in the garbage or in the recycling bin? You’re not alone. Until recently, the right answer has often been the trash. Disposable coffee cups, milk cartons, takeout boxes, and other food packaging has a plastic lining to make sure liquids and oils don’t seep through. But most recycling systems in the U.S. aren’t designed to process these plastic-coated containers: The plastic can jam up recycling machines, and if the plastic somehow makes it through the process, paper mills won’t be able to use it.... ...Georgia-Pacific, which collects approximately 6 million tons of paper products a year, is equipping two of its 14 facilities to be able to separate the paper from plastic. Three years ago, it invested $45 million to put this technology in place in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Muskogee, Oklahoma, installing a filter in its pulping machine that removes the polyethylene plastic from the paper. It then sends the paper through the regular recycled paper stream, where it appears in Georgia-Pacific’s products, such as paper towels for restaurants and toilet rolls for commercial buildings.... ...Full Story.. | ||||

About 100 million tons of multilayer thermoplastics — each composed of as many as 12 layers of varying polymers — are produced globally every year. Forty percent of that total is waste from the manufacturing process itself, and because there has been no way to separate the polymers, almost all of that plastic ends up in landfills or incinerators. Now, University of Wisconsin–Madison engineers have pioneered a method for reclaiming the polymers in these materials using solvents, a technique they’ve dubbed Solvent-Targeted Recovery and Precipitation (STRAP) processing. And occasionally — like during a pandemic when people panic buy loads of toilet paper, leading to a shortage — we are reminded not to take those inventions for granted. Responding to the frenzy over toilet paper during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, George Schroeder sought to shed some light on where toilet paper came from and how Wisconsin helped shape its supply.
